Visa-Free vs Visa-on-Arrival vs e-Visa
The five types of visa-free policy, explained.
1Mutual vs unilateral
Mutual visa exemption is a treaty between two countries and is stable. Unilateral exemption is granted by one country and can be changed or ended at any time.
2Visa-on-arrival vs visa-free
Visa-free means no procedure before travel. Visa-on-arrival means you apply at the border, paying a fee and getting a stamp. Both still allow border officers to refuse entry.
3Regional visa-free
Some exemptions apply only to specific regions or ports, such as Korea's Jeju Island. They are not nationwide — always confirm the exact scope before travel.
